    2 red states are needed.

In which states were the Democrats needing to block Republican victories in the 2014 Mid term elections?

Alaska, Colorado, Iowa,North Carolina and kansas

What major issues are the two parties divided on?

    democrats and republicans

Failing to pass major climate legislation, due to gridlock in both the House and Senate, how has Mr. Obama expected to address climate change?

Mr. Obama, having failed to pass a sweeping climate bill, has instead used executive actions to regulate pollution by automakers and power plants. Combined, the actions would make a significant dent in carbon emissions in coming decades.

What has been target of the executive actions?

to regulate pollution by automakers and power plants. Combined, the actions would make a significant dent in carbon emissions in coming decades.

How does Mr. McConell aim to combat Mr. Obama's premise that he will veto any legislation that aims to defund his policies?

the Environmental Protection Agency in broader budget bills. “I assure you that in the spending bill, we will be pushing back against this bureaucracy,” Mr. McConnell recently told Republican donors.

Has public opinion sided with the Republicans when they decide to hold no votes on budget proposals and allow the government to shut down?

Government shutdowns have generally hurt Republicans in recent years, and the party has tended to fold in the end. But the politics could be different if the forcing mechanism were Mr. Obama’s veto. At the very least, he may have to compromise over climate policy even more than he has so far.

As the last two previous presidents did, will Mr. Obama be able to place plenty of federal judges on the bench in his final two years in the executive office?

President George W. Bush and President Bill Clinton each placed a lot of federal judges on the bench in their last two years in office. Mr. Obama may not be able to do so.

What percentage among Mr. Obama’s nominees to District Courts have failed to be confirmed?
    Less than 50%

How have Democrats overcome this tactic of Republican blockage of judicial nominees?

Over the last two decades, both parties have become more aggressive at blocking the other’s judicial nominees. And Republicans have gone further than Democrats. Among Mr. Obama’s nominees to the District Courts (which conduct federal trials), 16 percent have failed to be confirmed
In what areas do the federal courts have major influence?
Federal courts only occasionally burst into the headlines, but they have a large influence. They often have the final say on policies relating to immigration, labor unions, business regulation, climate change, health care and same-sex marriage. The biggest issues go to the Supreme Court, but lower courts decide most questions.

How long is a United States senate term?
    Senators serve for six years.

What two projections does David Leonhardt make concerning the potentiality of a Republican and Democratic president?
The Upshot’s Senate forecasting model currently gives the Republicans a 57 percent chance of victory. That’s a real advantage, but it’s not a large one. To put it in terms of baseball, another subject that will occupy much of the next six weeks: The Democrats, for all their troubles, still have a better chance of keeping the Senate than even today’s best hitters have of reaching base.
